Tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and the American media resulted in an unusual broadcast problem during an event at the White House.
Trump attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 21 for a new helicopter landing area on the White House grounds. However, much of what the president said during the ceremony could not be heard clearly by viewers watching the event live.
The issue followed a dispute over access to the White House press pool. After the Trump administration restricted access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico, major television networks including ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC suspended their participation in the shared television pool.
Without the usual television pool crew at the event, microphones normally used to capture the president’s remarks were not available. In the White House video feed, Trump could be seen speaking while the noise from Marine One largely drowned out his voice.
Newsmax also highlighted the problem during its coverage. The network attempted to carry Trump’s remarks but returned to the studio when it became clear that the president could not be heard properly. A Newsmax host described the situation as appearing to show that the restrictions on the press had “backfired a little bit.”
The dispute between the White House and the affected news organizations has also moved into the courts. CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a lawsuit challenging the restrictions on their White House access, arguing that the measures violate constitutional protections for freedom of speech and the press.
The White House has defended its position, arguing that press freedom does not automatically guarantee journalists access to the White House grounds or participation in the presidential press pool.
The broadcast disruption highlighted the practical role of the White House press pool, which provides television networks with shared video and audio coverage of presidential events.
