Donald Trump praised the AfD's performance in the state parliament elections held on September 6 in Germany's state of Saxony-Anhalt. In a post on his social media account, Trump said the party had achieved “a very great success.”
Describing the AfD as Germany's “populist party,” Trump argued that opposition to the country's immigration rules and regulations was growing. He also said the AfD was continuing its rise and that Germany would no longer tolerate its current migration policies.
AfD fails to secure a majority
The AfD became the largest party in the Saxony-Anhalt elections with 43.8 percent of the vote. However, it failed to obtain the majority needed to form a government on its own.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) came second with 17.2 percent, after its vote share fell by 19.9 percentage points compared with the 2021 elections. The Social Democratic Party came third with 9.3 percent, increasing its vote share by 0.9 percentage points from the previous election.
The Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) entered the state parliament with 5.3 percent of the vote. Parties other than the BSW refused to form a coalition with the AfD, prompting discussion of whether the BSW could support an AfD government from outside.
