U.S. President Donald Trump has put Kharg Island, a strategically vital center of Iran’s oil exports, back in the international spotlight with a striking social media post amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Trump shared a dramatic, illustrative video depicting a major attack on Kharg Island, drawing attention to one of the most sensitive components of Iran’s energy infrastructure.
The post came at a particularly tense moment, as direct military activity between the United States and Iran has once again intensified in the region.

U.S. official: Kharg Island was not targeted
Despite Trump’s post, confirmed information from the ground painted a different picture.
A U.S. official told Reuters that American forces did not target Kharg Island during the latest military operations.
As of August 31, there was also no independently verified evidence of a large-scale attack on Kharg matching the scenario depicted in Trump’s post.
The message therefore appears to carry broader political and strategic significance rather than document a confirmed U.S. strike on the island.
Iran says oil operations are continuing
Iranian authorities also rejected suggestions that Kharg Island had suffered a major new attack.
Hamid Bovard, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company, said the situation on the island was calm and that oil operations were continuing.
The statement was intended to address concerns about the status of Iran’s critical energy infrastructure following Trump’s post.
Actual U.S. strike targeted Larak Island
The confirmed U.S. military operation in the region took place not on Kharg Island, but on Larak Island, located near the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. forces targeted two Iranian launchers on the island.
Washington said the systems posed a threat in the region, as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. military assets continue to escalate.
The operation has added a new dimension to the confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

Why is Kharg Island so important?
Trump’s decision to specifically highlight Kharg Island is significant because of the island’s central role in Iran’s economy.
Located in the Persian Gulf, Kharg is one of Iran’s most important crude oil export hubs and has historically handled a large share of the country’s seaborne oil exports.
Any major disruption to its terminals could therefore have consequences extending far beyond Iran, potentially affecting global energy markets and oil prices.
Its location in the Persian Gulf also makes the island strategically important to the broader security environment surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S.-Iran tensions rise again
Trump’s Kharg Island message came as military tensions between Washington and Tehran intensified once again.
Following the U.S. operation against targets on Larak Island, Iranian authorities also reported retaliatory actions against U.S. military interests in the region.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, meanwhile, said on August 31 that Iran was not seeking war but would respond to attacks against the country.
At the same time, Pezeshkian signaled that Tehran still favored a negotiated solution to the confrontation.
Kharg Island now under closer scrutiny
The fact that Kharg Island was not actually targeted does not eliminate the significance of Trump’s message.
By publicly highlighting one of Iran’s most strategically important oil facilities at a time of escalating military tensions, the U.S. president has brought renewed attention to the vulnerability of Iran’s energy infrastructure.
For now, the confirmed picture is clear: the latest U.S. military operation targeted Larak Island, not Kharg Island, while oil operations on Kharg continue.
However, as tensions between the United States and Iran intensify, the security of Kharg Island and Iran’s wider oil export infrastructure is likely to remain under close international scrutiny.
