President Donald Trump tried to shift blame for his party's midterm defeat away from himself, saying in a Fox News interview that aired early Wednesday that Democrats "did a good job" in their campaigns and blaming Republican candidates for the losses, the Associated Press reported.
Trump had repeatedly urged voters at rallies to "pretend I'm on the ballot." As results came in Tuesday night, he said: "I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!"

He also blamed Gov. Greg Abbott for his loss to Democrat Gina Hinojosa in Texas, calling him a "RINO," or Republican in name only, although he had endorsed Abbott and repeatedly praised him. In an interview with CBS News, Trump said, "My message is, congratulations to the Democrats." He told The New York Times he would accept the results and expected to reach agreements with Democrats, and said he did not regret endorsing Darline Graham, who lost in South Carolina.
Democrats flipped Republican-held Senate seats in North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, South Carolina and Kansas, all states Trump won in 2024 and where he had personally chosen the GOP nominees or campaigned for them. According to the AP Voter Poll, about two-thirds of voters nationally say Trump's policies have worsened economic conditions in the country.
