The average diesel price in the United States rose above $6 per gallon for the first time last week amid supply shortages, drawing attention alongside remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump about oil prices. According to data from the American Automobile Association, the average price reached a record $6.23 per gallon.
Trump blamed the administration of former U.S. President Joe Biden for price increases across the country. Arguing that oil prices were higher during the Biden administration than they are now, Trump claimed that his administration had prevented Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Trump said prices excluding oil had fallen sharply and that oil prices would also decline rapidly once the military conflict with Iran ended. He argued that this process would not last very long.
Trump also said that oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz were continuing. He argued that countries that had not helped the United States should cover U.S. costs once the conflict ended and said they would do so.
Trump also said Ukraine and Russia had agreed not to strike each other's energy targets. He claimed that the main reason diesel prices were rising worldwide was not Iran but, to a large extent, the Russia-Ukraine war.
