U.S. President Donald Trump said a referendum on the reunification of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland could be held in the future.
Trump made the remarks while answering journalists' questions during a visit to the Irish Open golf tournament in Dunbeg, Ireland. Asked about UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham's comments ruling out the possibility of a referendum on Northern Ireland joining Ireland, Trump said, "Everyone says that, and then all sorts of things can happen."
During his visit to Ireland on Saturday, Trump also said he wanted to see the country united and believed that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would ultimately be reunited.
Calling reunification "a great thing," Trump said the United Kingdom should make its view on the matter clear.
The political order in Northern Ireland
The governments of the United Kingdom and Ireland signed the Belfast Agreement, also known as the Good Friday Agreement, in 1998. The agreement ended the armed conflict in Northern Ireland and established new governing institutions based on compromise between unionists and nationalists.
