U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview published by FOX News on Friday that the United States is ahead of China in its technological competition over artificial intelligence, while defending AI regulations.
Trump said the U.S. administration had established safeguards for artificial intelligence. He argued that the most significant oversight in China comes from the country’s leader.
The Anthropic decision
Asked what measures could be taken to ensure that the United States wins the artificial intelligence race and to reassure Americans concerned about data centers, Trump cited Anthropic as an example.
Trump said Anthropic had done something very bad three months ago and that the company’s activities were halted quickly. The Trump administration had previously labeled the company a security risk and barred Anthropic from working with the U.S. government.
A federal judge ruled at the end of last month that the decision was unlawful.
Artificial intelligence competition with China
Trump said the most important safeguards in artificial intelligence are people who understand the technology and possess exceptionally high levels of intelligence.
Arguing that China has no similar limits, Trump said the decision-maker in the country is directly Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump claimed that the United States was winning its competition with China and said artificial intelligence could be a greater development than the internet and possibly the Industrial Revolution.
Trump said it would become clear in about a year whether the technology would be the greatest development and that artificial intelligence would produce predominantly positive results.
