U.S. President Donald Trump said he was preparing to sue the Center for American Progress over a report arguing that deploying the National Guard in some U.S. cities had not reduced violent crime.
In a statement on his Truth Social account, Trump called the report “a radical left-wing scam” and said, “This will be addressed by a lawsuit that is currently being prepared.”
Trump alleged that George Soros, Bill and Melinda Gates, Google, Apple, Visa, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Walmart, Toyota, T-Mobile and NBCUniversal were among those that funded the report. He said he was also seriously considering involving some of the contributors in legal proceedings.
Trump also said, “Crime has dropped dramatically since I took office, and they know it.” He described the report’s authors as “liars who should be held accountable.”
Findings of the Center for American Progress report
Published on July 13, the report challenged the administration’s portrayal of the historic decline in violent crime as the result of its own policies. It argued that the downward trend had begun earlier and that deploying the National Guard had no measurable effect on the trend in violent crime.
In a response last month to Trump’s threat to sue, the Center for American Progress said it was an obvious attempt to silence the organization and announced that it would not back down.
Neera Tanden, the center’s president and chief executive officer, also said its work was based on rigorous, evidence-based research. Tanden described the lawsuit raised by Trump as baseless.
