A pilot was injured Friday morning when a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff at Flying W Airport in Lumberton, Burlington County, New Jersey. The pilot, the only person on board, was airlifted to a hospital and was conscious and alert when transported, officials said.
The single-engine Piper PA-28 went down just after 9 a.m. in an open field near the north end of the runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and local reports. A dispatcher said the aircraft caught fire, and aerial footage showed the plane broken into several pieces in the field as first responders gathered around the wreckage.
Cause under investigation
The cause of the crash is under investigation. An airport employee who was not authorized to speak publicly told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the engine did not appear to produce power after takeoff, but that account has not been confirmed by officials.

Flying W Airport & Resort is a privately owned public-use airfield on Fostertown Road that straddles the Lumberton and Medford areas of Burlington County, about 20 miles east of Philadelphia.
