Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Poland should be included in the talks aimed at ending the Ukraine war. He noted that especially after contacts held in London, excluding Warsaw raised questions.
Tusk also criticized the "E3" format formed by Britain, Germany, and France. According to him, important supporters like Poland and Italy need to be part of the process when decisions affecting regional security are made.
The Prime Minister expressed caution about the idea of quickly establishing dialogue or contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Western Europe regarding Ukraine. Tusk emphasized that this approach should not be shaped hastily.
Since the start of the war, Poland has been one of Ukraine's strongest European supporters. The country stands out as one of the NATO members allocating the most resources to defense while providing military and financial aid.
In a joint statement released on Sunday by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelenskiy's call to end the war and his proposal for direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia were supported. The statement conveyed the message that ceasefire talks should be advanced with active participation from the US and Europe.
Tusk also said he spoke with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was also not satisfied with this format. He stated that any arrangement excluding Poland would not be binding for Warsaw.
The Prime Minister mentioned that a broader meeting including Poland, Italy, Britain, Germany, and France on Ukraine will take place in the coming days. This message has reignited discussions about decisions on the war's future being made within a narrow circle.
The statement from Warsaw shows Poland's desire to remain at the table during the diplomatic phase of the war. Tusk's remarks revealed that support for Ukraine is not limited to military aid but that the future negotiation framework is also directly important for regional countries.
