US Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta's luxury superyacht dropped anchor in the Venice lagoon, triggering a wave of protests in the city. The billionaire businessman, appointed by former President Donald Trump, was met with heavy security during his visit as part of the 'Freedom 250 Coastal Diplomacy Tour'.
The 117-meter white yacht Boardwalk docked at the Riva dei Sette Martiri quay, accompanied by a tugboat. The area is about a kilometer from the tourist hotspot St. Mark's Square. Authorities increased security in the area due to planned demonstrations.
The protests coincided with the Festa del Redentore, one of Venice's major festivals. The city is bustling ahead of Saturday's fireworks displays and religious ceremonies, expected to draw thousands.

Activists from the Morion social center marched toward the quay where the ambassador docked, chanting 'Venezia non si Usa' (Don't use Venice). The demonstrators said they see Fertitta as a representative of Trump's policies, which they say fuel conflicts, support Israel's military operation in Gaza, and increase global economic instability.
Italy's Green and Left Alliance (AVS) accused the government of pulling hundreds of police officers from public safety duties to protect the ambassador during his Italy tour, and called for support for the protest against US policies.
Meanwhile, recent public disagreements between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have strained bilateral relations. Meloni had firmly denied claims that Trump 'begged' for a photo together at the G7 summit. Ambassador Fertitta rejected suggestions of any rift, saying Trump and Meloni enjoy strong personal rapport.
