European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for deeper cooperation between the European Union and the United States in the field of artificial intelligence. Von der Leyen stated that if the two sides act together, they could create a powerful global impact.
Von der Leyen made the statement on the US-based X platform following the artificial intelligence session at the G7 Leaders' Summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France. She stressed that artificial intelligence is the most important technology of the era and is developing rapidly.
Joint market and shared responsibility
Von der Leyen said artificial intelligence offers great opportunities but also carries various risks for free and democratic societies. She noted that Europe and the US have complementary strengths, common security interests, and a leadership responsibility in this area.
Von der Leyen stated that the EU and the US together represent 70 percent of the world market and that cooperation must therefore be deepened further. Calling for joint investment, von der Leyen pushed for accelerating the use of artificial intelligence in every field, from industry to the health sector.
Call for trustworthy and safe models
Von der Leyen also said they must ensure the most powerful artificial intelligence models are trustworthy and safe. This message was seen as a sign that competition in artificial intelligence should not be conducted solely on speed and capacity, but also on security and oversight.
On June 13, the US administration decided to restrict foreign governments, companies, and individuals from accessing the "Fable 5" and "Mythos 5" artificial intelligence models developed by Anthropic. Following the decision, Anthropic disabled the advanced AI models for all users.
This development indicated a period in which technology, security, and access policies regarding artificial intelligence are being debated more closely on the Western front. Von der Leyen's push also highlighted Europe and the US's search for a common line on this issue.
