A possible $2.68 billion foreign military sale aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities has been approved by the US State Department. The package, announced Friday, includes the modernization of existing systems, along with related equipment and services.
The requested items include S-300 variant missiles, GAM-67 missiles and extended-range laser-guided air defense rocket and missile systems. The package also includes launcher modification kits and radars intended for use against unmanned aerial vehicles.
Funding depends on completion of the sale
The possible sale also covers erectable mast trailers, spare parts, software, engineering services and logistical support.
If the sale is completed, it will be financed through European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing funds allocated during the previous administration. These funds will be recorded as a US contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund through a one-for-one reimbursement mechanism.
No additional US personnel will be sent
The US State Department said the proposed sale would strengthen the security of a partner country that is advancing political and economic progress in Europe, thereby contributing to US foreign policy and national security objectives.
The department said the package would increase Ukraine’s capacity to address current and future threats but would not alter the region’s fundamental military balance. The sale will not require additional US personnel to be sent to Ukraine.
