U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright called on European Union countries to release part of their strategic diesel stocks onto the market. The proposal calls for 120 million barrels of diesel to be offered for sale within 180 days.
The amount represents more than one-third of the EU countries' total diesel reserves of approximately 315 million barrels. The proposal was presented as an alternative to U.S. President Donald Trump's option of restricting diesel exports.

Diesel stocks are concentrated in five countries
The largest diesel reserves in the EU are held by Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Poland.

Trump had announced that the option of restricting diesel exports was still under consideration.
The issue is also expected to come up at the International Energy Agency's governing board meeting scheduled for the following day.
US President Donald Trump later told reporters in Texas that Washington may ask European countries to release diesel stocks. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on X that Europe should accelerate its existing commitments and immediately bring additional diesel supply to market, adding that American farmers, truckers and businesses should not bear the burden of the global diesel shortage.
