U.S. Southern Command announced that an operation had been conducted against a vessel in the eastern Pacific in coordination with Ecuador and that the vessel had been sunk. The operation took place on Wednesday.
The command said intelligence had confirmed that the vessel supported the activities of an organization called Los Choneros. The statement alleged that the vessel operated as a floating refueling station used for illegal drug trafficking.
Vessel searched in international waters
U.S. Marines and sailors deployed from the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio boarded and searched the vessel in international waters. The people removed from the vessel were handed over to Ecuadorian authorities for the necessary procedures.
After the search was completed, U.S. forces sank the vessel to prevent it from being used again. Southern Command Commander General Francis Donovan said the operation was a determined step toward disrupting and eliminating logistics networks used in drug trafficking.
Donovan said the joint task force's ability to conduct sensitive operations demonstrated Washington's determination to increase pressure on the logistics networks of criminal organizations. Southern Command maintained that the intervention eliminated a critical link in drug traffickers' supply chain.
U.S. designation of Los Choneros
Los Choneros, based in Ecuador, was designated by the United States last September as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
