Eva Broderick is set to receive a Lifesavers Award from the Palmyra Fire Department in Wisconsin, more than a year after she brought her then-boyfriend back to life twice with CPR on a forest trail where both had been struck by lightning. The two married this August.
The couple was on a 10-mile hike in Kettle Moraine State Forest near Eagle, Wisconsin, on Aug. 9, 2025, a trip Nick Broderick had planned as a surprise. They were a little more than two miles from their car when a storm suddenly rolled in. "The rain just kept getting heavier and heavier," Nick recalled.
Lightning hit a tree right next to them, and the ground current struck them both. When Eva came to, Nick was lying on his back. Although she had been hit as well, she called 911 and began CPR.

Fifty minutes in the forest
Her phone signal kept cutting out, so dispatchers could only place the couple somewhere more than a mile into the forest. At the trailhead, rescuers faced three possible paths and had to guess. "We just took a best guess and tried to send people everywhere we could," said Palmyra Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Dan Schiller. It took crews 50 minutes on foot to reach the couple, and during that time Eva revived Nick twice.
"That is not something that normally happens," Schiller said of the two resuscitations, calling Eva's actions "pretty extraordinary on its own."
"He's kind of stuck with me"
Nick spent three days in the hospital and still has some hearing loss in one ear and tendon problems from the strike. Shortly after he was released, he proposed. "I brought him back from death, so he's kind of stuck with me," Eva joked. Choosing August for their wedding was deliberate, Nick said: "We wanted to rewrite August and make it a better month."
