Five adults were found dead Sunday night in a home in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue in Mundelein, a village in Lake County north of Chicago. Police were called to the house around 11:45 p.m. for a well-being check after a relative was unable to reach one of the victims.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the victims as James Schmidt, 80, and Rebecca Schmidt, 77, who lived at the home; their son Bryan Schmidt, 51, of Antioch; Bryan's son Maclaine Schmidt, 22, of Lake Bluff; and Nicole Heiser, 37, of Antioch, Bryan Schmidt's longtime partner.

Autopsies completed
Autopsies on Monday found that James and Rebecca Schmidt died of multiple gunshot wounds, while Maclaine Schmidt and Nicole Heiser each died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Bryan Schmidt also died of a gunshot wound to the head. Police have described the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide and said one victim is believed to have been in a domestic relationship with the suspect.
Investigators believe the victims were shot at close range with a handgun, and two handguns were recovered at the scene. Mundelein Police Deputy Chief Rick Wilfenger said the incident appears to be isolated and poses no threat to the public, adding that it is unclear what led to the shootings. The Mundelein Police Department, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and the coroner's office are investigating.
