Rescue teams reached 118 Nepali nationals and one British citizen one week after a flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa region on August 26.
A Nepalese army official announced that a total of 119 people had been reached during the operations. The floodwaters destroyed dozens of bridges and damaged roads. Helicopters were deployed to the region to support the efforts.
Official statement gives death and missing-person figures
The Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 1,050 people had died and 3,916 remained missing as a result of the flooding.
Source of seismic activity under investigation
Authorities had announced that an earthquake occurred in the region before the flood. After updating its data, the US Geological Survey said the source of the magnitude-5.2 seismic activity was a glacier collapse.
Experts at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, meanwhile, assessed that the flood was caused by an avalanche triggered by pieces of glacier breaking away from the mountain area.
