US officials speaking to the US-based news site Axios alleged that Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at least two missiles at two commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The officials said the vessels sustained serious damage but there were no casualties.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed a report from the area. The statement said a tanker was struck by unidentified munitions near the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz and a fire broke out on board. The UKMTO did not provide information on the source of the attack.
Axios suggested that the US could carry out military retaliation against Iranian targets in the region following the attack.
The attack occurred shortly after the expiration of a one-week agreement between the US and Iran to halt attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, there has been no official statement from Tehran regarding the allegations. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on his social media account that negotiations for a final agreement would not begin as long as threats from the US continue. Araghchi stated that the Iranian people and military are not affected by threats.
