The U.S. refugee admissions plan for fiscal year 2027 proposes limiting the number of people admitted to the country to 17,500 and allocating most of the places to South African Afrikaners. The plan was submitted to Congress by the U.S. State Department.
Estimated $500 million cost for resettlement
The estimated cost of resettling refugees in the United States during fiscal year 2027 is approximately $500 million.
Trump’s decision to prioritize Afrikaners
In an executive order signed in February 2025, Donald Trump accused the South African government of applying race-based discrimination against Afrikaners. The order instructed U.S. agencies to prioritize the admission of Afrikaners as refugees.
The U.S. administration increased the refugee admissions quota for fiscal year 2026 from 7,500 to 17,500 in May. The additional 10,000 places created by the increase were allocated to South African Afrikaners.
The South African government had previously rejected claims that Afrikaners face systematic discrimination and persecution in the country, saying that the claims do not reflect reality.
