A 28-year-old Venezuelan, Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, was shot once in the torso during an armed intervention by an ICE officer in Austin. Perez was taken to hospital, where his condition was serious but stable.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said city police had taken part neither in the operation nor in the armed intervention. The Texas Department of Public Safety said ICE had requested assistance with a vehicle pursuit at 12:50 p.m. local time, and that the armed intervention had already taken place when officers arrived in the area.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said it was inappropriate for ICE to investigate the incident alone. Watson called for city police to be included in the investigation.
About 100 people protest ICE
An anti-ICE demonstration attended by about 100 people was held in the area where the armed intervention took place. Some demonstrators argued with police during the protest, which was met with a heavy security presence. Some drivers supported the protesters by honking their horns.

Earlier ICE interventions recalled
In Houston, 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who had been pursued by ICE officers, was shot and killed in July. In Maine, 25-year-old Colombian national Johan Sebastian was also shot and killed by an ICE officer that same month.
ICE's armed interventions in Minnesota that resulted in the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in January also drew a nationwide backlash.
