U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order temporarily suspending some tariffs on phosphate fertilizers imported from Morocco to strengthen food security and support domestic agricultural production.
According to the White House, the decision aims to ensure that American farmers have adequate access to phosphate fertilizers. The order declared an emergency due to threats to the stability of fertilizer supplies needed to meet agricultural demand in the United States.
Under the measure, anti-dumping and countervailing duties imposed on phosphate fertilizers from Morocco will be temporarily suspended for eight months or until the declared emergency ends.
The statement emphasized that global supply chains for phosphate fertilizers and the raw materials used in fertilizer production have been disrupted for various reasons in recent months. These include conflicts in fertilizer-producing regions and trade measures adopted by leading fertilizer-producing countries.
The document noted that phosphate fertilizer production in the United States remains insufficient to support domestic agricultural food production, even when exports are taken into account. It also said that the government is working with the private sector to increase domestic fertilizer production capacity, but that these efforts will take time to produce a significant increase in supply.
