Utah expanded its wave of book bans in 2026 by adding Alice Sebold’s Lucky to the list of books to be removed from public schools on Friday, June 5.
With this addition, the number of books required to be removed from shelves in the state rose to 35. It was also reported that Utah banned 15 other books throughout 2026.
The decision came during an ongoing lawsuit filed in February against state-supported book bans. This has brought renewed attention to debates over school libraries and access to books in the state.
Lucky is the latest book added to the list of works requested to be removed from public school access. The text did not elaborate on the specific reasons for including the book on the list.
The lawsuit filed in February indicates that legal challenges against the state's book banning practices are still ongoing.
