Bob Dylan said that aging leads to a different perception of time. The artist wrote that turning 80 means "leaving behind the hours that chase you," creating a kind of freedom.
According to Dylan, one of the most notable changes at this age is the fading illusion that everything is truly under control. He noted that at this point, a person no longer "chases the parade" and becomes less easily directed.
However, Dylan did not describe aging solely as a relaxing process. He explained that the desire inside still pushes to do things, while the body often responds with "we've already done this."
The artist also described another difficult aspect of turning 80 as the feeling caused by realizing some things too late. He suggested that if this realization had come at a moment that could have changed the course of life, the outcomes might have been very different.
This reflection was published as part of a piece prepared for Donald Trump's 80th birthday. Dylan did not address Trump directly in his writing nor did he comment on politics.
In the same piece, Robert De Niro and Gloria Steinem also made remarks about Trump. De Niro said the president does not listen to advice, while Steinem suggested he should resign.
Dylan's recent musical activities have also drawn attention. It was reported that during his ongoing Rough And Rowdy Ways world tour since 2021, the artist has performed some songs from his archive again after a long time.
On the North America leg, Dylan performed I Shall Be Released for the first time in 18 years and You Ain't Goin' Nowhere for the first time in 14 years. In Dublin, he performed A Rainy Night In Soho for Shane MacGowan; at another concert in Ireland, he sang a traditional folk ballad for the first time in 34 years.
Last year, it was also reported that Dylan was working on new music with some members of his own band in Albany, New York. The artist also contributed to Willie Nelson's recently released Dream Chaser album last month.
