The toll from two consecutive major earthquakes in Venezuela is worsening. Health Minister Carlos Alvarado announced that the death toll from the earthquakes has risen to 235, with more than 4,300 people injured.
Heaviest damage in La Guaira
Alvarado stated that the province of La Guaira was the most affected by the earthquake, saying, "We currently have sufficient stocks of medicine and medical supplies, but to manage the intensity, we are shifting our entire logistics network to the La Guaira and Caracas area."
The Health Minister called on citizens not to occupy hospitals except for emergencies and said that field hospitals are being set up due to patient density.
Urgent call to health personnel
Alvarado addressed all health personnel, doctors, nurses, and medical students, stating:
Everyone must proceed to the nearest health center to quickly treat our injured. We have begun setting up field hospitals. Our goal is to reduce the burden on hospital buildings and treat non-critical patients there, freeing up operating rooms and intensive care units for severely affected earthquake victims.
International aid request
Venezuela's Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, and National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez visited La Guaira to conduct inspections.
Speaking in the Macuto area, Rodriguez said they hoped to rescue "as many people as possible" from the collapsed buildings.
Noting that La Guaira had been declared a disaster zone, Rodriguez stated they had requested international aid. He said the first search and rescue teams from the Dominican Republic were about to land, and teams from other countries would arrive in the coming hours.
Two major tremors 39 seconds apart
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) had reported two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 occurring 39 seconds apart in Venezuela. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded 23 kilometers southeast of the town of Yumare in Yaracuy province, and a 7.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded 24 kilometers northeast of the town of San Felipe in the same province. The depths of the earthquakes were reported as 10 kilometers in Yumare and 21.9 kilometers in San Felipe.
