The White House has asked OpenAI to restrict the distribution of its new AI model GPT-5.6.
According to CNN, the White House requested that the model be made available only to a limited number of government-approved partners. Sources said this step was taken due to the model's advanced capabilities.
According to The Information, an internal memo to OpenAI employees stated that the government regulates access to the model on a per-customer basis and that the model will not be preferred in the long term.
A White House official said cooperation continues, while OpenAI did not comment on the matter.
The Trump administration imposed similar restrictions on Anthropic's models on June 13, citing national security threats.
