Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Anton Kovalskyi as acting prosecutor general after parliament approved the dismissal of Ruslan Kravchenko.
The appointment was made through a decree issued by Zelenskyy. Kovalskyi, who had headed the Khmelnytskyi Regional Prosecutor’s Office, thus became acting prosecutor general.
Kravchenko submitted his resignation during the investigation
Kravchenko resigned on September 7 while an investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) into corruption allegations involving officials at the Prosecutor General’s Office was ongoing. Parliament approved Kravchenko’s dismissal on September 15.
NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) announced on September 5 that they had uncovered an alleged criminal organization led by a department head at the Prosecutor General’s Office. The organization’s members were suspected of taking bribes and laundering money through fake call centers.
The parties traded accusations
Kravchenko denied the accusations against him. He accused NABU Director Semen Kryvonos of fabricating documents and said he had signed a second notice of suspicion concerning a person close to SAPO Head Oleksandr Klymenko.
Kravchenko alleged that this person had influenced judges at Ukraine’s High Anti-Corruption Court and offered the judges unlawful benefits. He also alleged that the same person had helped some individuals evade military mobilization.
NABU and SAPO rejected Kravchenko’s allegations. The two institutions said that no notice of suspicion had been issued against Kryvonos and described the statements as part of an attack on the independence of anti-corruption institutions.
