U.S. Ambassador to Athens Kimberly Guilfoyle issued a statement about Nikos Maziotis, who was released in Greece after serving a 14-year prison sentence, and said vigilance was needed against the threat of political violence.
In a post on the American company X, Guilfoyle argued that Maziotis and his associates were radical left-wing terrorists. Saying that such people had no place in a civilized society, Guilfoyle said Maziotis’ release showed that the threat of political violence must not be ignored.
Guilfoyle described Maziotis’ actions as barbaric and said they must be condemned fully and unconditionally. The ambassador also said they stood in solidarity with victims of terrorism around the world.
Guilfoyle said they would not return to an era of assassination attempts, armed attacks and bombings, and would not abandon the pursuit of justice. The U.S. ambassador also announced that the State Department had barred Maziotis from entering the United States.

Maziotis’ actions and capture
Maziotis became known after a series of bombings carried out in 2003 outside several ministry buildings and bank branches. The group led by Maziotis was said to have carried out a rocket attack on the U.S. Embassy in Athens in 2007.
Maziotis was captured in 2010 and conditionally released in 2011. After going underground in 2012, Maziotis was detained again in 2014 following an armed clash in Athens.
Maziotis’ wife, Paula Roupa, attempted to help him escape from prison in 2016 by flying a helicopter. The escape attempt failed.
