A total of 557 irregular migrants who arrived aboard three boats over the past 24 hours were brought ashore on El Hierro, one of the Canary Islands.
Coast guard units said the boats reaching the island in southwestern Spain had been intercepted at sea and had departed from the coast of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa.
Three groups included nationals of six countries
The boats carried 268, 99 and 190 people, respectively. The migrants were nationals of Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Côte d’Ivoire.
Women and children were among those brought ashore on El Hierro. Some people whose health raised concerns were taken to hospital.
According to Spanish Interior Ministry data, the number of irregular migrants who reached the Canary Islands from North Africa in September exceeded 1,700.
