US Vice President JD Vance’s speech at the Republican Party’s midterm election convention in Dallas was interrupted when a protester unfurled a Mexican flag.
Vance said that if the protester loved Mexico so much, he could buy him a plane ticket to go there. Pausing his speech, Vance called for the protester, who was carrying a Mexican flag instead of a US flag, to be removed from the hall.
The protest took place during a debate over birthright citizenship
The protest occurred while Vance was speaking about birthright citizenship. Vance argued that the Republican Party was fighting to protect opportunities for future generations.
In January 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order seeking to limit birthright citizenship to children of US citizens or people who have lawful permanent resident status in the country. The US Supreme Court ruled in June that the order was unconstitutional, but Trump issued new executive orders on the same issue.
Vance supports the Trump administration’s immigration policy
After the protester was removed from the hall, Vance praised the Trump administration’s immigration policy. During the first two years of their second presidential terms, Vance and Trump sought to fulfill the party’s pledge to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
The policy has been the subject of protests organized across the country by immigrant rights advocates and many members of the public. Vance said Republicans would continue waving the American flag against a demonstrator carrying a foreign flag and fighting for the American dream.
Vance also said that a safe home, a good school, a happy family and a better future than the past were not guaranteed automatically. He said every generation must fight to achieve these goals.
