A five-seat PA-34 Piper aircraft carrying a four-member American family went missing while traveling from Great Harbour Cay in the Bahamas to Opa-locka, Florida.
The aircraft lost contact with air traffic control on Monday after taking off, about 21 kilometers west of Andros Island. US teams joined the search taking place off Andros, the largest island in the Bahamas.
Silvi Larrieu, a member of the family, said that her uncle Mario Lamar, his wife Lili Lamar, and her grandchildren Christian Sosa and Sofi Sosa were on board.
US teams support the search
Bahamian police received a report that the aircraft may have crashed into the sea off Red Bays, a settlement in northwestern Andros Island. The aircraft was seen circling off the Bahamian coast before disappearing from radar.
Severe thunderstorms were reported in the area during the flight. It remains unclear whether weather conditions played a role in the aircraft's disappearance.
US Coast Guard teams are supporting the search being conducted by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force about 24 kilometers off Andros Island. An HC-144 Ocean Sentry surveillance aircraft is being used in the operation.
Initial efforts were delayed by poor weather conditions. The search is expected to resume once weather conditions improve.
Bahamian police said that locating the aircraft and the people on board was the priority.
