Azerbaijan has welcomed the United Arab Emirates' nomination of Minister of State Lana Zaki Nusseibeh to succeed António Guterres as secretary-general of the United Nations.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aykhan Hajizada said Baku welcomes the initiative, speaking in response to a media question about the nomination.
Hajizada said Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to choosing the next secretary-general in line with the principles of the UN Charter, and expressed hope that the process would produce a stronger and more effective UN able to respond to today's challenges.

The six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council unanimously endorsed Nusseibeh after the UAE announced her candidacy last week. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Palestine have also voiced support.
Nusseibeh served as the UAE's permanent representative to the UN from 2013 to 2024 and has held posts including vice president of the UN General Assembly and president of the UN Women Executive Board. If chosen, she would be the first woman to lead the world body.
Guterres' second term ends on Dec. 31. Türkiye is also reportedly preparing to nominate former Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu for the post.
