Brazilian opposition leader Flávio Bolsonaro landed at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport in Florida on Wednesday morning, accompanied by his family. Local television footage showed the private jet arriving shortly after 9 a.m. local time.
Bolsonaro left Brazil through Argentina
Argentina's migration authority said Bolsonaro had crossed into Argentina and then left on a private flight toward Ecuador before continuing to the United States.
His departure came after Brazil's Supreme Court ordered him to surrender his passports. Bolsonaro, a senator and the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is under investigation by the country's highest court over alleged corruption and money laundering. He is also being investigated in a sports betting case and in a probe into the production of a film about his father.
Washington grants visas to the family
A State Department official told ABC News that President Donald Trump's administration is issuing visas to Bolsonaro and his family. A Trump adviser told CNN that Trump approved allowing him to enter the United States after his election loss. Some reports said the family is expected to request political asylum.
Bolsonaro lost Sunday's runoff to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His father, who was sentenced in 2025 to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup, also flew to Florida in December 2022, days before Lula took office after defeating him in that year's election.
