Tom Barrack, the U.S. representative for Syria, said Washington was deeply concerned about the Israeli airstrikes on the Abu Zuhur Military Air Base in northern Syria.
Barrack said the strikes had heightened tensions in the region and did not contribute to regional stability, describing them as “an unnecessary escalation.”
Israeli aircraft struck the runway eight times
An Israeli aircraft targeted the runway of the Abu Zuhur Military Air Base in northern Syria, in the eastern countryside of Idlib, early Tuesday. Eight airstrikes were carried out against the base.
The airstrikes caused material damage to the base’s infrastructure. No one was killed in the attacks.
Barrack defended Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government
Barrack said Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government had not adopted an aggressive approach and did not have proxy forces. He said the government had repeatedly demonstrated its preference for reducing tensions with Israel.
Barrack said the United States would continue to host talks, as it had in the past, to encourage diplomatic contacts between the two countries. He added that diplomatic initiatives should take precedence over military tension.
