The body of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, who went missing during Independence Day celebrations in Mississippi, was found after intensive search efforts. Wells disappeared on July 4 while on a boat trip with friends near Horn Island.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter announced that a body was found in the water at the northwestern tip of Horn Island at 8:45 a.m. local time on Monday. Ledbetter stated that the body matched the description of missing teen Nolan Wells. Official identification procedures are still ongoing.
After Wells' disappearance, a large team consisting of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, and the US Coast Guard launched search efforts. The family also appealed for help on social media to find their son.
Volunteer search and rescue organization United Cajun Navy announced on Monday afternoon that search efforts had been halted. In a message posted on Facebook, the organization said, "On behalf of United Cajun Navy, we extend our deepest condolences to Nolan's family, friends, teammates, and everyone whose life he touched."
Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, said in an emotional Facebook post, "His father, our family, my friends, and I are completely devastated. My heart is shattered for my sweet son, who was always ready to cheer up and encourage others."
The family also warned against scammers trying to exploit the tragedy. Wonsley said, "No GoFundMe campaign has been started by me, my husband, my family, or my friends. Please report any fake campaigns you see."
