Datafolha's poll on Brazil's presidential election showed Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ahead of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in the first round. Lula received 39% support, while Bolsonaro's share stood at 35%.
The study, released Friday, surveyed 2,002 voters in 125 municipalities across the country from September 8 to 10. The margin of error was given as two percentage points.
Runoff results nearly tied
If Lula and Bolsonaro face each other in a runoff, Lula would receive 46% support and Bolsonaro 44%, according to the poll. The two-point difference falls within the study's margin of error and was therefore considered a technical tie.

Support varies by voter groups
According to the poll, Lula has stronger support among low-income voters, women and Catholics. Bolsonaro leads among high-income voters, men and Evangelical voters.
Lula also maintains his lead in northeastern Brazil. He received 53% support in the region, compared with 25% for Bolsonaro.
Election dates
As the campaign approaches its final weeks, security, the economy and the political legacy of former President Jair Bolsonaro are among the prominent issues. Flavio Bolsonaro, the former president's son, became Lula's main rival after receiving his father's political support.
Brazil's first-round election is scheduled for October 4. If no candidate receives more than half of the valid votes, a runoff will be held on October 25.
