AB 2017, a bill recognizing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as statewide holidays in California, took effect with the signature of Gov. Gavin Newsom. The bill was introduced by State Assemblymember Matt Haney.
The measure aims to ensure that people observing these holidays at schools and public institutions do not have to choose between their religious beliefs and mandatory academic or professional obligations. It seeks to reduce the obstacles Muslims may face when observing their faith in educational and professional settings.

CAIR welcomes the decision
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) welcomed the measure in a written statement issued after Newsom signed the bill.

CAIR said in its statement that Muslims in California will no longer have to choose between their faith and their schools or workplaces.

Washington was the first state to recognize the holidays
Washington became the first state to officially recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in April 2025.
