Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella raised the issue of Washington’s temporary tariff relief during a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday. De La Espriella asked for the customs tariffs affecting Colombian products to be temporarily suspended.
Describing the call as “highly productive,” De La Espriella said an official procedure needed to be completed for the measure. The Colombian president said the US government was willing to move forward with temporarily suspending the tariffs.
De La Espriella also instructed Trade Minister Mauricio Gomez to travel to Washington on Tuesday. Gomez was asked to lead negotiations aimed at securing a temporary suspension of the tariffs.
US aid after the earthquake
The tariff request came as the United States continued supporting Colombia after the devastating earthquake that struck on August 10. De La Espriella thanked Rubio for US economic and humanitarian aid, as well as search-and-rescue support.
The US State Department confirmed that Rubio and De La Espriella spoke on Tuesday. The department said they discussed ongoing US support for Colombians affected by the earthquake.
US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the United States had provided $26.5 million in emergency humanitarian aid to help Colombia recover. Pigott also said search-and-rescue teams had been sent and that airlift support had been provided using C-130 transport aircraft.
