Colombian President Gustavo Petro called on U.S. President Donald Trump to provide an explanation regarding the Colombian citizen shot dead by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Maine.
In a social media statement, Petro said that 26-year-old Yohan Sebastian Duran Guerrero was shot dead by an ICE agent last weekend in Biddeford.
Petro: 'This is a murder committed by the U.S. government'
The Colombian leader stressed that Trump must make a statement to the Colombian people. Petro said, "He was killed because of a mentality that thinks they have no rights and are worthless. What happened in Maine is a murder of a Colombian and a Latin American, committed by the U.S. government." Petro added that he expects Colombia's diplomatic representatives in the U.S. to take legal steps to bring those responsible to justice.

Colombia condemns and calls on Washington for investigation
Colombia's Foreign Ministry also condemned the incident and demanded that U.S. authorities launch an investigation into Guerrero's death. The ministry offered condolences to Guerrero's family, noting that he was in a vehicle with his 3-year-old daughter.
The ministry's statement said that the Washington Embassy and the Boston Consulate General are in contact with local authorities and the family of the deceased. The statement said, "The Foreign Ministry calls on the competent U.S. authorities to swiftly and thoroughly clarify the circumstances of this tragic incident and to conduct the necessary investigation."
ICE violence continues in the US
Guerrero's death is the latest fatal incident involving ICE agents in the U.S. Just a week earlier, on July 7, Mexican citizen Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who had lived in the U.S. for over 30 years, was also killed by ICE police gunfire in Houston, Texas. The Biddeford incident marks at least the ninth case of lethal violence by ICE forces since the tightening of immigration policies last year in the U.S.
