During Fourth of July celebrations in the US, a passenger plane was struck by a firework shell. Delta Air Lines flight 1076 was on approach to Chicago Midway International Airport from Atlanta when it was hit.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it has launched an investigation into the incident. According to the FAA, the Airbus A319 was on approach around 8:30 p.m. local time when the crew reported that a firework shell had struck the aircraft. The plane landed safely without declaring an emergency and taxied to the gate.
A Delta Air Lines spokesperson said there were 52 passengers and six crew members on board, and no one was injured. The airline stated that post-landing inspections found no damage to the aircraft.
However, Chicago police said the firework caused minor damage to the aircraft's paint, and additional inspections are underway. Delta Air Lines reiterated that no damage was found during mechanical inspection.
As the FAA investigation continues, it has not yet been determined where the firework was launched from and who was responsible. Delta said it will cooperate with authorities.
