The UN General Assembly extended the term of High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk by another four years. In the voting, 144 countries voted yes to the extension, while 10 countries including the US and Russia voted no, and 13 countries abstained.
Volker Türk had been serving in this role since October 2022. His new term will cover the period from October 12, 2026, to October 11, 2030.
Criticisms of Türk from UN Watch
After the decision, the civil society organization UN Watch, known for its pro-Israel stance, launched a campaign. The organization criticized Türk on social media, claiming that during his term he condemned Israel 58 times and criticized the US more than China, North Korea, and Cuba. It was also alleged that Türk described Iran's response to US and Israeli attacks as "retaliation."
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, however, expressed his satisfaction with Volker Türk's work.
