Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced his full endorsement of Republican Congressman John James, who is running for governor in Michigan.
Trump's full endorsement
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said, "It is my great honor to endorse America First Congressman John James as he runs to become the next Governor of the great state of Michigan." Trump stated, "John James has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Governor of Michigan - HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!"
John James responded to Trump on social media, calling him "the greatest President of my lifetime."
Rival withdraws from race
Following Trump's endorsement, Michigan State Senate Minority Leader Republican Aric Nesbitt announced he was withdrawing from the Michigan Republican gubernatorial primary and endorsing James.
In a statement on social media, Nesbitt said, "This campaign has always been about standing with President Trump to fight for the people of Michigan and defeat the Democrats in November. Today, I am suspending my campaign and proudly joining President Trump in endorsing John James as the next Governor of Michigan." Nesbitt emphasized unity, stating that a divided primary only helps the Democrats.
John James responded to Nesbitt's move on X, stating, "When President Trump endorsed this campaign, Aric Nesbitt did exactly what a true Michigan CONSERVATIVE should do: he united behind the President and stood behind our mission to Save Michigan from the Libs and RINOs destroying our Republic!"
Reactions from other rivals
Businessman Perry Johnson, who is also running in the Michigan Republican gubernatorial primary, suggested that Trump's endorsement of James was a wrong move.
Johnson said, "President Trump got bad advice again. John James is a two-time statewide loser, and Michigan has seen this movie before: Trump-endorsed statewide candidates like John James, Tudor Dixon, Matt DePerno, and Kristina Karamo all failed when it mattered most."
Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox also posted on X, saying, "Like @POTUS, I won Michigan twice by building a coalition of working Michiganders tired of being fooled by the elites. I am proud to have voted for President Trump in each of his last three elections, donated thousands of dollars to support his campaigns, and been hired to represent him as his election integrity attorney in Michigan in 2024. When I win, I look forward to being President Trump's favorite Governor."
