Dwyane Wade's statue outside the Miami Heat's arena has a new face. The team released photos of the reworked sculpture on Friday, two years after the original drew waves of criticism for barely resembling the Hall of Famer.
Wade revealed in an essay published the same day that he had agreed to have a new head made for the piece. "I had to ask myself a pretty simple question: 'If people don't feel that connection when they look at the face, why wouldn't we try to make it better?'" he wrote.

'We listened'
"So, we listened and had honest conversations with everyone involved, and we all agreed to make adjustments to the head," Wade wrote. The work was completed over the past few days behind a plywood box that kept the public from seeing the changes.
"This isn't about erasing the work that was already done or disrespecting the artists who put their time and talent into creating it. It's about being willing to listen," he added.
'This is my house'
The statue recreates one of the most famous moments of Wade's career: the end of a double-overtime win over the Chicago Bulls in March 2009, when he hit the winning shot at the buzzer, hopped onto a courtside table and shouted, "This is my house."
Wade spent most of his career with the Heat and was a central figure in the franchise's three NBA championships.
"The 305 deserves to look at that statue and feel the same energy it felt that night," Wade wrote, referring to Miami's area code. "It may be my likeness, but it will always be our house."
