After a skyscraper in central Manhattan, New York City, was evacuated due to collapse risk, officials announced the building is stable. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the situation as 'extremely serious' and surrounding streets were closed to traffic.
New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) Commissioner Ahmed Tigani stated that the building was monitored for hours and no structural movement was detected. Tigani said, 'The situation is currently stable and safe.'
Commissioner Tigani said that the necessary materials to reinforce the damaged floors have been brought to the scene and that similar repair work will soon begin in other parts of the building. Early Tuesday, the building, where construction work was ongoing, had been evacuated due to collapse risk.
The skyscraper, located near landmarks such as the United Nations Headquarters, Grand Central Terminal and the Chrysler Building in Manhattan, had raised safety concerns in the heart of the city.
