At the Tama Zoo in Japan's capital Tokyo, extreme heat in the last week of July led to the death of three lions. According to a statement by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the three female lions aged 3, 11 and 15 died at the zoo in the Hino district.
The government announced that the animals first showed symptoms such as loss of appetite and reduced movement, after which measures against the heat were increased. Portable air conditioners and fans were placed in the shelters, water was poured on the animals to cool them, and medication was given.
Despite all measures taken, the lions named Mugi, Ichigo and Rune lost consciousness and died one after another. Examinations found severe dehydration and multiple organ failure in the animals.
Last week, temperatures in Tokyo ranged between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius. There are still 5 male and 11 female lions at the zoo.
