Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi at the Turkish House in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, as Tehran pushed a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week.
Araghchi’s plan makes the reopening conditional on Washington fulfilling commitments from the June 17 Islamabad memorandum, including releasing frozen Iranian assets, lifting oil sanctions and ending the naval blockade of Iranian ports. “The choice now rests with the United States,” he said. The Wall Street Journal later reported that President Donald Trump had rejected the proposal.
According to Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry, Fidan and Araghchi discussed bilateral relations and the latest regional and global developments. Fidan is holding a series of meetings in New York during the UN’s high-level week.
