Former Google engineer Hugh Williams built a fully functional search engine without writing a single line of code, using an AI-powered coding tool.
According to Business Insider, Williams indexed more than 1.5 million Wikipedia articles with the search engine called "Zeter," developed using Anthropic's "Claude Code" tool.
Advanced Features
The search engine includes modern features found in Google and other leading search engines, such as autocomplete, related searches, and AI summaries.
Williams stated that he did not write any code for the project and that all programming work was carried out by Claude Code. However, he noted that his experience at Google and the information retrieval system projects he contributed to in the early 2000s helped him give the correct instructions to the tool.
Williams expressed that working with Claude Code is more like "directing" than programming and emphasized that AI tools will not replace software developers but will instead assist them to deliver better performance.
Cloud System in 48 Hours
In a separate report published by Business Insider in August 2025, Williams had previously completed a cloud system project on Amazon Web Services (AWS) using Claude Code in just 48 hours. The project, which normally would have taken three weeks, was quickly concluded thanks to the AI assistant.
Williams recounted that in that project, he needed to learn a new graph database, but that at times Claude Code made errors, deleting code from the project or suddenly stopping working during long sessions.
Hugh Williams' Career
A well-known figure in the technology world, Williams was involved in the development of infinite scroll technology. Williams, who was hired by Bill Gates to work on Microsoft's Bing search engine, later moved to eBay before joining Google. He currently develops technical products and advertising technologies for movie and streaming platforms at Paramount.
