Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could use the military tensions with Lebanon and Iran for political gain.
In an interview with Channel 12, Barak argued that if Netanyahu realizes he will lose the general elections scheduled for October 2026, he could set various scenarios in motion. Barak suggested that Netanyahu might order strikes on targets in the city of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon just days before the elections.
Barak said that following such an attack, Hezbollah would respond with drone strikes on Israel, and the Israeli military would then target the Dahieh area south of Beirut, adding that the clashes would not remain limited to Hezbollah but could escalate into a war with Iran.
Barak also said that the moment Netanyahu realizes he is going to lose, he would not hesitate to take extremely dangerous steps to undermine the elections. He suggested that there could be provocative attempts to raid vote counting centers.
Yisrael Beiteinu party leader Avigdor Liberman also issued similar warnings on May 14, noting the possibility that Netanyahu could take a military step for 'electoral purposes'.
In an assessment published on April 24, Haaretz military analyst Amos Harel stated that the Netanyahu government was aiming to launch a new offensive on Gaza based on electoral calculations, and that some officials in the government were waiting for Hamas to make 'a major mistake' by firing rockets at Israel.
