G7 leaders are meeting in Evian-les-Bains, France, to discuss the war in Ukraine, conflicts in Iran, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, economic imbalances caused by China, and the rise of artificial intelligence. The summit is held amid growing tensions between US President Donald Trump and European leaders.
The meeting in Evian-les-Bains includes the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, along with the European Union. This year, leaders from India, South Korea, Kenya, and Brazil were also invited to participate.
The G7 agenda focuses on support for Ukraine, the situation in Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for global energy flows. Leaders will also address China’s growing trade surplus and the impact of artificial intelligence on the economy and security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also expected to attend the summit. European G7 members aim to persuade Trump to adopt a stronger, united stance on Ukraine.
The Iran issue is among the most critical topics at the summit. The leaders are meeting shortly after the announcement of a framework agreement intended to end the conflict between the US and Iran.
French President Emmanuel Macron, the host, prioritizes ensuring the summit concludes without visible divisions. To prevent Trump from leaving early, Macron invited him to a dinner at the Palace of Versailles on June 17.
According to French officials, this invitation serves as a commemoration of the 250th anniversary of US independence. It was also reported that Macron delayed the start of the G7 to allow Trump to attend a cage-fighting event at the White House.
Artificial intelligence is another key topic at the summit. France invited technology leaders to discuss children’s online safety and digital infrastructure.
G7 leaders are also expected to issue a joint declaration expressing their commitment to addressing the heavy debt burdens faced by developing countries.
