The UFC event held in a specially constructed cage right next to the White House in Washington was staged to celebrate Donald Trump's 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the United States. Trump and UFC President Dana White walked together from the Oval Office to the South Lawn, turning the night into an extraordinary fight show just steps away from the presidential residence.
"UFC Freedom 250" featured 14 fighters stepping into the ring. Although the event started over an hour late due to rain and weather conditions, the crowd beneath the 92-foot structure set up around the White House quickly filled the space.
More than 4,000 spectators surrounded the cage. Among the audience were figures from the Trump administration as well as guests like Mark Zuckerberg, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and FBI Director Kash Patel.
Before the first fight, the national anthem was performed, and the passing of warplanes overhead received strong applause in the arena. Trump sat at the edge of the cage throughout the night, with his wife Melania Trump to his right and Dana White to his left.
One of the night's early highlights saw Diego Lopes defeat Steve Garcia with a powerful knockout. After his victory, Lopes entered the ring wearing a cowboy hat, punched his chest, and celebrated by saluting the crowd just a few meters above Trump.
In the next match, Bo Nickal took down Kyle Daukaus in the middle of the first round. He then pressed his advantage on the ground until the referee stopped the fight. Nickal later crossed the cage to shake hands with Trump, sharing a brief conversation.
Mauricio Ruffy, Sean O’Malley, and Josh Hokit also won their matches during the night. Hokit's unverified claim about former First Lady Michelle Obama sparked mixed reactions in the arena.
In the co-main event, Ciryl Gane knocked out former light heavyweight and middleweight champion Alex Pereira to claim the interim heavyweight title. After the referee's early stoppage, a few seconds of silence were followed by music and applause.
The biggest surprise came in the main event. Undefeated champion Ilia Topuria lost by technical knockout in the fourth round to Justin Gaethje. Gaethje, closely watched by Trump, landed a heavy combination in the third round that cut Topuria’s face; the ringside doctor nearly stopped the fight then. Topuria continued into the fourth round but after taking heavy blows, his team threw in the towel following the match.
After the fight, Gaethje said, "I come from America. Two hundred and fifty years ago, we were also a candidate for a much bigger surprise, and today you see how we stand." He thanked active, retired, and future service members.
Strict security measures were evident throughout the event. Multi-layered checks were conducted at the White House grounds entrance, with Secret Service agents stationed alongside the press line. Thousands of active-duty soldiers surrounded the upper sections of the spectator area.
Between matches, patriotic and military-themed visuals were shown alongside sponsor advertisements. A dramatic video narrated by Trump carried the message "Join the fight," followed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ "I Won’t Back Down," and announcements honoring the armed forces.
The close relationship between UFC and Trump also formed the backdrop of the night. Dana White recounted how, after buying UFC for just $2 million in 2001, he struggled to find venues until Trump opened doors by launching the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. White had openly supported Trump at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Republican National Conventions.
White emphasized that the night was not political but a celebration of America. He stated the event was organized for the country’s 250th anniversary, with no other political agenda, hoping it would foster a sense of unity.
